Proposal would take Oregon senators pay for walking out of sessions News Staff © Provided by KATU Portland SALEM, Ore. – Oregon’s Senate Democrats introduced a proposal Thursday that would let the Senate President fine senators who walk out of a floor session. The proposal comes after Senate Republicans staged a protest late last month and refused to show up for a session, saying they were protesting “in solidarity” with Oregonians who disagree with how the state is handling the COVID-19 pandemic. If approved, the new proposal would allow the Senate President to fine state senators $151 – equal to their per diem payment for a session – if they are not excused and instead choose not to attend.

It will also put $200 million into a rent assistance fund, most of which will be for landlords who can apply for back-rent owed to them by their tenants. The caveat, which was controversial during public hearings over the weekend, is that landlords would be required to forgive 20% of the back-rent if they want to apply for those funds.
