Michigan House committee revives bills to open governor, lawmakers to public records laws

The House Oversight Committee heard testimony Thursday morning on House Bills 4383 through 4392, which together would open the governor, lieutenant governor and their staff to the state’s Freedom of Information Act and subject the Legislature to a separate Legislative Open Records Act.
It’s far from the first time lawmakers have tried to change Michigan’s open records laws, which consistently rank among the worst in the country. Michigan is one of the only states where the Legislature and governor are fully exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, which allows the public to request communications and other relevant documents from the offices of government officials and agencies.
