UPDATE: Gov. Phil Murphy appointed a special investigator Wednesday to probe allegations that several inmates were beaten at New Jersey s notorious prison for women.
Murphy said he ordered a full independent investigation, under the direction of former federal prosecutor and ex-state comptroller Matthew Boxer, into what happened at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County on Jan. 11.
“I am sickened by the horrific reports of what happened” Murphy said.
Female inmates have long been uniquely vulnerable to abuse and must be treated with dignity and respect like everyone behind bars in New Jersey, he said.

A woman incarcerated in the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility said she was beaten and sexually assaulted by a corrections officer earlier this month while other officers allegedly punched and kicked multiple women in what she called a revenge attack.

The current Port Authority Bus Terminal, despised by commuters and ridiculed by comedians, has a date with demolition to be replaced by a gleaming state-of-the-art structure.
Port Authority officials unveiled a final scoping plan Thursday for a ground-up replacement that would include a five-story bus terminal, a close to 1 million square foot bus storage and staging building between 9th and 10th avenues, and a bigger set of ramps directly to and from the Lincoln Tunnel, to be opened between 2030 and 2031.
