Low Priority? | News, Sports, Jobs - The Intermountain

Apr 22, 2021 Though it may not have been their intention, West Virginia lawmakers sent a clear message to West Virginians and those looking in during this year’s legislative session: Education is not a priority unless we’re talking about being able to control it from Charleston. As the session ticked down to its final day, the budget measure that was passed still included big cuts to spending for West Virginia University, Marshall University and the state’s other four- and two-year institutions of higher learning. In theory, the hope is much of what was cut will be restored at the end of the current fiscal year on June 30 from surpluses in tax collections, assuming all goes well.

Diane W Mufson: Legislative session had good, bad, ugly

Due to COVID-19, the West Virginia 2021 legislative session was closed to the public, but its actions will have far-reaching effects on the public. Proposed bills were argued, amended, negotiated, sabotaged, mutilated and killed so that until the session’s final moments, legislation continued morphing. The old adage about the similarity of watching laws and sausage being made fits the bill. Having a Republican supermajority in the Senate and House of Delegates as well as governor of the same party should have, but didn’t, make it easy to pass all desired legislation. With memories of the 1966 spaghetti western “The Good, Bad and the Ugly” starring Clint Eastwood, here are my opinions of a few of the good, bad and ugly results of the 2021 legislative session.

A few thoughts on the legislative session | News, Sports, Jobs

sadams@newsandsentinel.com As I write this Sunday, I’m still recovering from the end of the 2021 legislative session that ended at midnight Saturday. It was truly a 60-day rollercoaster and certainly a session for the history books. I’m going to highlight several things that happened this session, so bear with me. ¯¯¯¯¯¯ First, I will be happy when the legislative session next year returns to some form of normalcy. I surely hope next year we’re not still operating under COVID-19 restrictions. As much as the video and audio streams make things easier, it’s also better to be on the floor, face-to-face with lawmakers.
