Larry Allen, R-Winfield, was elected as the senate majority leader Wednesday at the Statehouse. Republican members of the Kansas Senate voted to select Sen. Larry Alley as their majority leader Wednesday, marking the end of a tumultuous session for the chamber. The move comes after lawmakers moved earlier this year to remove Sen. Gene Suellentrop, R-Wichita, from the leadership post after he was charged with felony eluding police and driving under the influence, among other offenses. Suellentrop was stopped and arrested in the early morning hours of March 16 after allegedly driving the wrong way on Interstate 470 and then I-70 for upward of 10 minutes.

It may end on Friday, period, without being renewed, depending on what legislative leaders do Wednesday with it. The feeling is that it s time to be done. Under new law passed this year, Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly has less power over taking executive action regarding disaster emergencies such as COVID-19. Whereas before such requests for emergency extensions happened under the State Finance Council, in which the governor chaired over GOP legislative leaders, they now will happen solely under the jurisdiction of the Legislative Coordinating Council, comprised of only legislative leaders.
