Ron DeSantis to help Floridians regain ownership of the troves of data that companies collect came to a halt Friday, when state lawmakers could not agree on how tightly to limit how Big Data harvests and uses people’s information.

Florida lawmakers pass record $101 5 billion budget

Updated Apr. 30 TALLAHASSEE — Eight months ago, state lawmakers were fretting about the state’s budget. With millions of Floridians out of work, sales tax revenues dried up and state agencies were facing deep cuts. But in a dramatic turnaround, sales tax revenues rebounded and Congress sent Florida billions in stimulus dollars, allowing lawmakers to go on a spending spree this year. State lawmakers on Friday signed off on a record $101.5 billion on the state budget that has left both Republicans and Democrats happy — mostly. Flush with $10.2 billion American Rescue Plan funding from Congress, Republicans are using it to cross off longstanding issues and plug holes in the budget created by the pandemic.

Legislature ends session with $101 5 billion budget

TALLAHASSEE – Florida lawmakers approved a $101.5 billion state budget – by far the largest in Florida history – and ended the 2021 legislative session Friday amid a flurry of last-minute deal making. After intense partisan clashes over a host of controversial bills that gained approval this year – including election law changes, a measure pushing back against Big Tech censorship, anti-riot legislation in response to Black Lives Matter protests and a transgender sports ban – a budget process initially expected to involve painful cuts ended up being relatively smooth.  The spending plan for the year beginning July 1 is 10% bigger than the current budget, after being fattened by billions of dollars in federal stimulus money.
