Federal lawmakers in the U.S. House and Senate are behind a bill to remove the cap on state and local tax deductions.
Congressman Mondaire Jones of New York’s 17th District was in Westchester Friday to announce that he introduced a bill Thursday with fellow Democrat Long Island Congressman Tom Suozzi to remove the $10,000 state and local tax, or SALT, deduction cap that was part of federal tax legislation former President Trump signed in December 2017.
“It would fully restore the SALT deduction and provide direct relief to taxpayers, including homeowners, all throughout Westchester and Rockland Counties and, indeed, all throughout New York state,” Jones says.

Jan 28, 2021 Senator Kirsten Gillibrand made a joint announcement with House Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) Thursday of their newly introduced bill in Congress that would bring more federal resources to rural areas of the country.
The Rebuild Rural America Act would set aside $50 billion dollars in block grants for rural regions, with larger allocations for areas with high poverty rates.
Gillibrand said that a federal program designed specifically for these regions will help to address the unique challenges they face. Too often rural communities can t access the federal grants and other public resources that could help them solve these problems because they don t have the same economic development organizations. They don t have the grant writers or the lobbyists that the larger communities can afford and have, she said.

President Biden signed an executive order on Monday to lift restrictions on transgender Americans who wish to serve in the U.S. military.
Biden’s order allows all transgender soldiers to serve openly and to receive gender reassignment surgery under the military’s health plans.
“President Biden believes that gender identity should not be a bar to military service, and that America’s strength is found in its diversity,” the White House said in a statement.
