McCain: Alabama s Fear of Yoga

McCain: Alabama’s Fear of Yoga Updated Apr 05, 1:28 PM; Posted Apr 05, 7:00 AM Facebook Share This is an opinion column. I have a terrible back. Repeated lower back injuries forced me to abandon distance running, which I loved. Crossfit and boot camp type workouts? Forget it. That’s how I found myself walking into a local yoga studio a few years ago. I needed a form of exercise that would allow me to stretch and strengthen my body particularly my core without the risk of heavy or repetitive impact. What I discovered in the studio was an activity that did just that and more. Aside from the movement, there’s a lot of deep breathing, stillness, and focusing on one thing at a time involved in yoga practice things that are highly beneficial to our mental and physical health but I find difficult to do independently. My mind races from days spent in front of screens, jumping quickly from post to post, idea to idea, image to image.
