16 March 2021 | Natalie Bannerman Infinera and American Tower have completed the first point-to-multipoint coherent optical transmission in a carrier network environment in Latin America.
Using Infinera’s XR optics technology the field trial was carried out over American Tower’s Passive Optical Network (PON) network in Colombia. As such it successfully showed the compatibility of Infinera’s XR optics with existing Gigabit PON (GPON) traffic over a single-fibre PON deployment in a metro regional area.

This breakthrough in 5G data speeds was achieved using something called E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) technology. EN-DC technology enables mobile operators to boost 5G speeds and coverage by leveraging a 4G network.
