Duduzane Zuma, the princeling who would be king

Duduzane Zuma has no track record in the ANC, no constituency, and for many, no reputation. There is also no evidence that he can offer solutions, a plan or even a vision for South Africa’s future. He is also vastly different from his father in ways that could count against him. That said, he does appear to have money, bucketloads of it. Sometimes, in politics, that is all you need. Zuma’s promise to City Press) appears to be that he is now his “own man”, while also seeking to continue some of his father’s policies, specifically the RET red meat of nationalising the SA Reserve Bank, implementing free higher education, and land expropriation without compensation.

While it’s true that each year comes with its own trials, triumphs and tribulations, it feels as though 2020 really did a number on us. The ANC’s Integrity Commission has found that the party’s national executive committee must suspend Secretary-General Ace Magashule.  In a tough-worded, three-page report the commission says the party is backtracking on its anti-corruption resolutions made at a special August 2020 anti-corruption meeting of its national executive. At a meeting last week the party avoided making Magashule step aside by engaging in a war of legal opinions, some of which found that the step-aside rule was unconstitutional.  The commission says this doesn’t seem right.  “The Integrity Commission is concerned that there is a growing negative perception about the NEC. The [commission] is increasingly receiving feedback from the general public, including ANC members, that the NEC is not providing decisive leadership and is paralysed in fulfilling its promise of organisational renewal and combating corruption.

Magashule remains ANC SG, Mabe says

The commission also said Magashule should be suspended pending the outcome of his criminal case. Magashule is currently facing 21 charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering linked to his time serving as the premier in the Free State. Mabe shared the secretary-general would be working as usual until the normal processes of the party are completed.  “Magashule remains SG of ANC and will do the work he is expected to be doing. The National Executive Committee is fully aware of processes that are to be undertaken. the last NEC that we had, where the NEC was closed by the president, his closing was made open to the media, did outline what is happening going forward.”
