Minister Zizi Kodwa made the statement during the late Jackson Mthembu s memorial, which was held online via Zoom.
He said what made the incident more painful was because not only had Mthembu been a fierce advocate of adhering to Covid-19 rules and regulations, but had succumbed to the virus.
Kodwa added that Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipani s avoidable incident overshadowed Mthembu s send-off.
Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipani was slammed for not wearing a mask during the ANC s Zoom memorial service for the late Minister in the Presidency Jackson Mthembu.
It was an insult to his memory , former ANC spokesperson and deputy State Security Minister Zizi Kodwa said on Monday after the premier failed to wear a mask to his funeral on Sunday, and the incident was captured on television and video clips that did the rounds on social media.

Mthembu died yesterday due to COVID-19 related complications. Duarte says Mthembu had unbelievable work ethics. He worked long hours, his belief was that didn t leave a job undone he had a great sense of humour and an ability to communicate very easily with people and to draw them in with the conversation. He could be quite stern if he needed to be. So for us, we lost a brother and a friend, this is a great loss. We are still reeling from the shock, she says.
“Minister Mthembu was an exemplary leader, an activist and life-long champion of freedom and democracy. He was a much loved and greatly respected colleague and comrade, shows passing leaves our nation at a loss.”
Mthembu (62) had tested positive on 11 January, according to a government statement. After complaining of stomach pains, he was admitted to hospital. His passing on Thursday has come as a shock and surprise.
“Comrade Jackson died with his boots on,” said ANC Deputy Secretary-General Jessie Duarte in a hastily called briefing that underscores Mthembu’s standing in the governing party.
Mthembu’s life and career are intrinsically embedded in the ANC, and also the United Democratic Front (UDF) from his student days in the 1970s.

As the Hawks pounced ,high-flyer Edwin Sodi simply had nowhere to hide, even in his big mansion.
Former Bosasa chief operations officer, Angelo Agrizzi, made headlines in 2020.
It was equally embarrassing for ANC MP Vincent Smith, accused of receiving bribes amounting to hundreds of thousands of rands, to have to appear alongside Angelo Agrizzi.
