MADISON â State health officials on Thursday issued a grim reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over in Wisconsin as the more contagious delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread â mostly among unvaccinated residents.
The seven-day average of COVID-19 cases reached 242 cases per day, almost three times higher than the 85 daily cases just two weeks ago, according to the state Department of Health Services.
Cases remain considerably lower than they were in late 2020 and early this year, but health officials say the delta variant is expected to continue to push up infection rates nationwide until more individuals get vaccinated.

New DHS site breaks down vaccine data

MADISON, Wis. A little more than 50% of everyone in the state has had at least one COVID vaccine dose. But who is getting them and where are the shots going?
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services wants to answer that with a new online tool. In a Friday press conference, DHS officials showed video of a new site that tracks where people in Wisconsin are getting vaccinated, like which cities, towns, counties and even school districts.
The detailed data is important because it lets the state see who and were are lagging behind.
Currently, only those 12 years and older are approved by the federal government to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Clinical trials are underway to test vaccines in younger children and may not be available until later this year or early next year.
State data shows that 26% of 12-17 year olds have had at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Percentages are higher for older teens. The overall statewide vaccination rate is on par with the nation’s rate, but pockets of unvaccinated people in the state and across the country make continued COVID-19 testing important, so health officials can track the disease.
