Uber drivers are to be granted key workplace benefits including a guaranteed minimum wage, holiday pay and pensions from today following a Supreme Court ruling.
The landmark decision by the ride hailing app means that 70,000 drivers will be treated as “workers” rather than self -employed contractors for the first time.
The Silicon Valley giant said it had decided not to contest the judgment last month, which it had initially insisted legally applied to only a few dozen drivers.
Writing in the Evening Standard Uber’s chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said: “This is a significant improvement in the standard of work for UK drivers. LONDON (Reuters) - Uber’s proposal to expand benefits to British drivers following a court defeat last month has not put an end to the fight for better gig-worker pay in the UK and around the world, an issue that has become a flashpoint for the labor movement.
On Tuesday, Uber Technologies Inc said it would offer guaranteed entitlements to its more than 70,000 UK drivers, including holiday pay, a pension plan and limited minimum wage.
Uber has said it wants to expand limited benefits similar to those offered to drivers in the UK across all of Europe and the United States.

LONDON (Reuters) - Uber drivers in Britain should receive the minimum wage from the time they log on until they log off from the app, two former drivers who led a successful court battle said after the firm granted workers rights on Wednesday.
Following a Supreme Court defeat last month, the Silicon Valley-based company reclassified its more than 70,000 drivers in Britain as workers, meaning they are guaranteed entitlements such as holiday pay.
On the minimum wage, which stands at 8.72 pounds ($12.13) per hour for those aged 25 and over, Uber said it would apply after accepting a trip request and after expenses and that on average drivers earn an hourly 17 pounds in London.
