Something unusual occurred in Albany on Friday: State lawmakers moved to take power away from a governor who is accustomed to amassing and wielding much of it over the last 10 years.
The legislation to curb the powers granted to Cuomo nearly a year ago at the beginning of the pandemic is a 360-turn for a governor who rose to national prominence for his public response to the pandemic and is now facing questions about his political future. In light of recent events, however, it is clear we need to move toward a system of increased oversight, review and verification between the Legislature and executive branch, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins said just before the chamber approved the measure.
