Torres is a former U.S. Marine who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and has been an advocate for deported veterans for seven years. He is a screenwriter who lives in Salt Lake City. In April 2016, I was nervously sitting inside the federal office of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Downtown San Diego, waiting for a man in a suit to tell me whether or not I would be granted citizenship. At the time I was living in Tijuana, a member of the Deported Veterans Support House and one of hundreds of honorably discharged veterans who for one reason or another found themselves living in exile. We were unable to return to the country we fought for, the country where our families waited with love and anxiousness, the nation that we called our home.
