Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, has called for a ban on the use of earth-moving equipment or excavators in the mining areas.
Illegal miners’ activities have over the years depleted Ghana s forest cover. Their activities also pollute water bodies due to the crude and unregulated nature of the mining process.
The introduction of sophisticated equipment, the use of dangerous chemicals and the recent influx of foreign – predominantly Chinese – miners have significantly exacerbated its negative effects.
Due to the bad effects of illegal mining, the President, Nana Akufo-Addo has deployed some 200 soldiers to remove all persons involved in illegal mining after his earlier promise in 2017 to eradicate the problem of galamsey “once and for all”, somewhat failed.
A few weeks ago, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, ordered individuals and companies engaged in prospecting in forest reserves with or without legal authorisation to stop.
He further directed the Minerals Commission to immediately suspend acceptance, processing or recommending the grant, including renewal or extension of reconnaissance and prospecting licences in Forest Reserves.
The Minister’s decision follows the revelation that a number of individuals and companies unlawfully acquire licences under the pretext of undertaking reconnaissance or prospecting in Forest Reserves and yet proceed to engage in illegal mining in such Forest Reserves, with its obvious adverse consequences on the environment.

An elder of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr R. O. Frimpong-Manso, has called for the formation of an inter-party committee against illegal mining in the country.
The inter-party committee, he said, should be under the chairmanship of the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor, and meet intermittently to review the fight against illegal mining.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Frimpong-Manso explained that all political parties were complicit in one way or the other in supporting illegal mining hence the need to deal with the problem once and for all with the involvement of all political parties.
