NWS: SE Wyoming Mountains Could Get 14 Inches Of Snow

The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service says some southeast Wyoming mountain ranges could get up to 14 inches of snow on Tuesday as a weather front passes through the area.

A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the Snowy Range and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for the Sierra Madres and South Laramie Range beginning at noon today through Wednesday morning. Rain showers are expected across southeast WY and western NE today, before transitioning to a rain/snow mix tonight west of Cheyenne. The transition from rain to snow will occur much earlier in the day for the higher terrains where high temperatures hover near freezing. The area with the most travel impacts are expected along I-80 between Cheyenne and Elk Mountain, where snowfall totals are higher. Snowmobilers and hikers should use caution in the Snowy Range, Sierr

Overall, nice weather across southeast Wyoming and Nebraska Panhandle beginning Wednesday through the early weekend. Widespread precipitation is expected to move across southeastern Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle beginning early Tuesday morning. With the higher daytime temperatures, precipitation should stay mostly rain in the lower elevations, and mostly snow for the higher peaks. There is a chance for some rain transitioning to snow during the nighttime hours Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. However, not much accumulation is expected as road temperatures remain fairly warm, outside of the higher terrains along I-80 near the summit, Sierra Madres, and the Snowy Range where snow totals will be higher. With the warmer temperatures and spring in the air, convective weather is on our doorstep for Tuesday across the far southeastern portions of Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle. Strong to potentially severe thunderstorms will be possible. Ping pong ball size hail and 60 mph gusts possible in the strongest storms. Area for storms may shift slightly with later forecasts but take the time today prior to storms to ensure you and your family have more than one way to receive warnings.
