Victims in Highway 401 rollover from Brampton

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) CORNWALL – Provincial police say the victims in Thursday’s fiery rollover crash on Highway 401 were from Brampton. An SUV travelling west between Boundary Road and McConnell Avenue went off the road around 4:20 p.m. and struck a culvert, bursting into flames. SD&G O.P.P. have released the preliminary identities of two of the victims. They are the driver – a 64-year-old man – a 55-year-old woman passenger, both from Brampton. A second passenger – a 46-year-old man from Brampton – in in hospital with life-threatening injuries. Relatives are still being notified and a police official says actual names of the victims won’t be available likely until Monday.

Youth sentenced for bringing knives to South Dundas school, threatening student

(Newswatch Group/Bill Kingston, File) CORNWALL/IROQUOIS – A South Dundas youth who brought knives to school in January last year and threatened another student has been sentenced to probation and community service. The 15-year-old, whose identity is protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was sentenced last week after pleading guilty in a Cornwall court to making death threats, possession of a dangerous weapon and disturbing the peace. Charges of break and enter and forcible entry were withdrawn by the Crown, court records show. The young offender will be on probation for two years and has to submit a DNA sample to the court. The probation order includes a clause that the boy not have any direct or indirect contact with the student he threatened.

Real estate market continues to rocket; April sets more records

CORNWALL – The Cornwall and area real estate market continued to smash records in April. The Cornwall and District Real Estate Board says there were 201 homes sold for nearly $72 million – more than double the number of homes sold in April last year. In the first four months of this year, 615 homes have changed hands – an 80 per cent increase from the same period last year. Board President Troy Vaillancourt says the market has been buoyed by a “sustained increase in new listings” in recent months, even though inventory is razor thin with less than a month of inventory available based on the current sales pace.

Cornwall Electric customers face 2 3% increase this summer

CORNWALL – Get ready to dig a little deeper for your Cornwall Electric hydro bill this summer. The utility will be increasing rates 2.3 per cent, starting July 1. For a home using 1,000 kilowatt hours monthly, that will be an extra $3.20 a month. Regional Manager Jackie Baird says they have been able to keep increases close to inflation due to long term contracts with Hydro Quebec. Roughly 80 per cent of a bill is the wholesale cost of electricity which is passed through to customers, according to the utility. This increase is less than it was in July 2020, when rates rose 2.95 per cent. The 2019 increase was 2 per cent.
