Concerned about the various socio-economic, political and security challenges facing the country, the Nigerian media has advanced a five-point action that the Federal Government should pursue to address the nation’s challenges.
The suggestions of the media industry were contained in a State of the Nation address, jointly signed by President Newspaper Proprietors’ Association Of Nigeria (NPAN) and President Nigerian Press Organisation (NPO) Kabiru Yusuf; President Nigerian Guild Of Editors (NGE), Mustapha Isa; President Nigeria Union Of Journalists (NUJ), Chris Isiguzo.
Pointing to the high cost of governance as a challenge, the media stakeholders posited that reduced cost of governance will free substantial funds to fight insecurity, provide social safety nets for the generality of the people, fund developmental projects, and stem the current penchant for external and local borrowing by the government.

The meeting was attended by traditional rulers including the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III; The Metropolitan Archbishop Emeritus, Abuja Catholic Diocese, John Cardinal Onaiyekan; Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), Kayode Fayemi; Plateau State Governor and Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Simon Lalong; religious leaders, the service chiefs,
Since I haven’t had the courage to sink my feet into the shark-infested, murky waters of Nigerian politics, I always admire my professional colleagues who are able to do so.
I think of such men as Alhaji Lateef Jakande, former Governor of Lagos State, Chief Segun Osoba, former Governor of Ogun State, Mr Moses Ekpo, present Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief Clement Ebri, former Governor of Cross River State, Chief Ayogu Eze, an Enugu State Senator and Chief Smart Adeyemi, Senator representing Kogi West. This may not be a comprehensive list of journalists who have been in politics. Long before these men, we have had such men as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Chief Tony Enahoro, to mention but a few.
