Corpus Christi Caller Times
Karen Brooks was three months into her new job as the night cops reporter, when she stopped by the Caller-Times newsroom earlier than the start of her usual 2-11 p.m. shift.
The newsroom was chaotic unusual for a Friday afternoon. Her editor was already returning to the newsroom after completing preliminary reporting at the scene of a shooting at a local motel. Brooks headed over to the Days Inn off Interstate Hwy 37 and Navigation Boulevard immediately.
The day was March 31, 1995. Selena Quintanilla Perez had just been shot to death. By the time I got out there, (radio deejays) were already playing Selena songs on the radio, Brooks shared, who now goes by Karen Brooks Harper.
