Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) asserted that 5G would prove to be a game changer and lead to exponential increase in benefits for the economy and society
Synopsis
The government must look at primary revenue from telecom in perspective of secondary revenue that would accrue from other industries that harness the benefits of next-generation technology.
The industry s demand relating to removal of legacy levies, taxes, rationalisation of USOF, and other measures for long-term viability, are now more crucial than ever
The industry s long-term viability is a must to ensure robust, ubiquitous telecom services, and issues related to financial health are now even more relevant for the sector that has kept the nation connected amid the pandemic, COAI has said. Industry association COAI - which represents telcos like Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea - said that the price discovery formula for 5G spectrum needs to be given a thorough consideration, in the context of positive rub-off effect the new-age technology will have on all other sectors.

Whether you get prepaid or postpaid, it becomes a task to make the conversion from one to the other. COAI, or Cellular Operators’ Association of India, knows the same and is suggesting a change to the Department of Telecom (DoT). Instead of going through the KYC process at the operator’s outlet, all one would need is an OTP to make the conversion within 30 minutes. That too without changing SIM cards! The COAI has proposed the concept to the DoT, in which the latter has asked operators to submit a Proof of Concept. The final decision will rest on the outcome of the proof of concept, say DoT in an official note. The process will eliminate the tedious task of KYC and new SIM cards, thereby making for a contact-less way to change connection types. Also Read - Airtel introduces offers
