The pandemic has opened a fresh debate around the future of 5G in India. Infrastructure requirements could further delay its launch

Over the past couple of months, telcos and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) officials have been fighting a perception battle against a group of people who believe that 5G could harm humans. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents service providers and gear vendors, said that the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme will boost local manufacturing, exports and also create employment opportunities.

The Telecom Equipment Manufacturers’ Association (TEMA) which represents domestic telecom companies lauded the separate financial outlay of Rs 1000 crore earmarked for MSMEs.
Government’s plan to incentivise production of telecom equipment and networking hardware will help establish the local manufacturing ecosystem of these products, encourage research and development, attract large investments and boost small enterprises, industry executives said.
Mobile phone companies Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea could focus on developing India-specific use cases mainly around the healthcare, education and agriculture sectors, among others, backed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) as the much-delayed 5G trials finally get underway.
