Vodafone Idea: Jio, Airtel, Vodafone Idea spend Rs 9,000-crore on deploying infrastructure during pandemic

Vodafone Idea have together invested as much as Rs 9,000 crores in network infrastructure expansion during the year, following the contagious Coronavirus pandemic. Nearly Rs 9,000 crores has been spent by telecom service providers in putting telecom sites and laying optic fibre cable since last one year, SP Kochhar, director-general, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) told ETTelecom, adding that the industry is fully prepared to serve the evolving needs of customers and ensure highest possible network uptime. Delhi-based telecom group represents incumbent operators as well as multinational technology vendors such as Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei, Cisco and Juniper. Kochhar further said that telecom operators have also acquired additional spectrum in the recently-concluded auction, and the deployment of the new or additional spectrum would further enhance network capacity.

To protect their users from falling into the trap, telecom companies are now issuing a public advisory, warning users that such messages promising free recharge plans for online education floating on social media could possibly steal their personal data.   In a statement, the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) said, “It has been brought to our notice that fake messages are being circulated by people on social media platforms with fraudulent intentions.”

The Signal boosters and repeaters are associated with the degradation of mobile signals and a decrease in overall service quality.The telecom advocacy group, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has written to the Department of Telecom ( DoT) reminding them to act on the concern around the illegal sale of mobile signal boosters. These signal boosters and repeaters are said to cause interference with signals from towers impacting the overall cellular network quality.

Officials of the government s Wireless Monitoring Organisation with seized repeaters. The Cellular Operators Association of India, in a letter to the Department of Telecommunications, demanded a ban on importing and e-commerce sale of wireless repeaters, arguing they hinder telcos’ planned coverage and infringe on their spectrum ownership rights. It asked the DoT to work with other parts of the government to accomplish this, and said that although some e-commerce platforms have stopped sale of these devices, others continue to make them available. Wireless repeaters are a result of the perfect storm of low data prices, jugaad, scanty telco coverage, and dense neighbourhoods. These devices are usually (illegally) installed in neighbourhoods and buildings that lack proper coverage from authorised base stations, by essentially spreading the coverage of a cell tower’s signal into areas that are not planned for coverage.
