TUPELO ⢠Asya Branch s historic run in pageantry takes its biggest step Sunday night.
The Booneville resident will be on the global stage representing the United States in the 69th annual Miss Universe competition. Branch, who crowned Miss USA 2020 last year, is one of 74 contestants vying for the Universe title. It feels like a dream and I m just not ever waking up, Branch recently said. I don t think it s completely been able to sink in. I m just still over the moon and so excited. I haven t wrapped my mind around it fully, but it is amazing. It truly is a dream come true.

The 2021 Miss Universe National Costume Show took place on Thursday at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel.
The contestants modeled ensembles that celebrated their countries.
Some of the most daring costumes featured sheer fabric, feathered headpieces, and dramatic capes.

Claudia Viera designed Akselrad s outfit, which was inspired by an actual Aregentian soccer uniform, according to the Miss Argentina Instagram page.

The 69th Miss Universe competition will take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood in Hollywood, Florida. The event will air live on FOX beginning at 7 p.m. Central time.
If Branch wins, she would be the first Mississippi native to ever hold the title and the first Miss USA to win the competition since 2012.
Starkville native Shauntay Hinton was the first Black woman from Mississippi to win Miss USA in 2002, but she represented Washington, D.C., in that competition.
Becoming the first Black woman to win the title was an interesting experience for her because it was an historic moment, she said.
