Proud of her full Kayan-Kenyah-Iban heritage, part model and former public relations executive Francisca Luhong James recently posted on Instagram about her feelings being the first indigenous Miss Malaysia Universe contestant.
The eldest of three in her family with two younger brothers, James was thrilled to be crowned Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 last year in an e-Gala ceremony that was live streamed from the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation website.

The Sarawakian beauty took to her IG Story earlier today (Thursday, 20th May) to share her thoughts on being dubbed as a “nude model” on Google. This was believed to be the work of anti-fans.

Appalled by the shocking discovery, the 26-year-old stated that she doesn’t understand why some people are willing to tarnish her name in such manner. She called out the culprits by saying,
Speaking of Miss Universe, Miss Universe Malaysia 2011 Deborah Henry took to her Instagram to call for Muslim women to be allowed to participate in beauty pageants. According to the TV personality, the responsible parties need to “reevaluate the rulings” in order to enable equal rights for all women to participate in such competitions.
“Why can’t Malaysian Muslims join Miss Universe? If it’s the bikini part, they can wear full covered bodysuits. Isn’t that a solution to the fatwa? 2021! It’s time for all women to be able to represent Malaysia on the Miss Universe stage,” Deborah wrote.

Called Kampungku , the dress, which translates to my village , was inspired by traditional Malay kampong houses that dot the landscape in villages and rural areas across Peninsular Malaysia.
Francisca, who is a Dayak native with rich mixed roots in the Kayan-Kenyah-Iban lineage, wanted to evoke a sense of nostalgia through the dress that also served as a powerful reminder of one s humble beginnings.
