Perseverance is rapidly closing in on its target, with less than 600,000 miles left to go before its scheduled 8.55pm GMT landing in Mars s Jezero Crater. Like the Curiosity mission before it, the alien-hunting rover will dive into the Martian atmosphere virtually blind because of an 11-minute delay in communications between Earth and Mars. NASA s engineers will, therefore, find out whether the rover has survived its trip unscathed after a delay.

When NASA s Mars Perseverance rover touches down on the red planet on Thursday, it will arrive with a lot of precious cargo. Among the brand new technology is a drone that is set to be the first ever to fly on another planet: the Ingenuity helicopter.
Ingenuity is essentially a test flight it s experimenting with flight on another planet for the first time, and has limited capabilities. It weighs only about 4 pounds, but its success will no doubt pave the way for more ambitious exploration of the red planet.

Touching down on Mars later this week, in search of previous life, NASAâs Perseverance rover is equipped with its own helicopter for a birdâs-eye view of the red planet.
The fourth rock from the Sun doesnât surrender its secrets easily, and many missions have been lost since the Sovietsâ Mars 2 crashed in 1971. Mars 3 failed a few days later, after only a few minutes on the surface.
