FIVE decades. That is how long Mid Cheshire College in Hartford, latterly known as Warrington and Vale Royal College, was an unmistakable landmark of the Northwich area. A feature in the lives of local residents for generations, it gave countless young people a chance at an education, and a future. Yet walking past the site now brings a sense of irrepressible sadness. The college has been demolished and the site is being cleared. Glossy billboards that line the site’s perimeter boast that there will be 128 houses built on the land, as well as car parking facilities and a green public space.
ART of iconic Chester landmarks has gone on display at a Cheshire College – South and West campus. Chester-based creative artist Nicky Thompson’s work includes landmarks such as the Groves, Eastgate Clock, Chester Racecourse and Chester Zoo as part of his ‘Made in Chester’ artwork series. The artwork was originally exhibited at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester and now has a permanent home at Cheshire College’s Chester Campus in Handbridge, after Nicky put a call out on social media in a bid to keep the collection together instead of selling the individual pieces separately. Inspired by great poster artists of the early 20th century, the collection will now take on a new lease of life encouraging the next generation of local creatives to look to their local surroundings when drawing inspiration.
