Additional details have been released regarding the United School District’s decision to move students at the United Jr./Sr. High School to asynchronous instruction for Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13 for deep cleaning.
District Superintendent Barbara Parkins confirmed reports earlier today, saying that this was not a scheduled cleaning of the building.
While students have been moved to online instruction for the remainder of the week, Parkins added that Grand March and Prom are still scheduled to take place on Friday. She said that Grand March will be held outside with parents able to watch from their vehicles.
UNITED HIGH SCHOOL TO CLOSE WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY FOR CLEANING By Hometown4
The United School District announced a change in learning for this week.
The district announced in a Facebook post that the United Jr./Sr. High School will move to asynchronous learning on Wednesday, May 12 and Thursday, May 13, as the building will undergo deep cleaning. In addition, all extracurricular activities for Wednesday and Thursday are canceled.
The district added that Prom and Grand March ceremonies are still scheduled for this weekend, and elementary students will continue to meet in-person.
High school faculty members will report at their regularly scheduled times, and students can pick up grab-and-go meals at the elementary school entrance from 10 to 11 a.m. both days.
In his final update video of the spring semester, IUP President Michael Driscoll thanked the IUP community for staying strong over the past year.
Driscoll opened the video, titled “We Made It”, by thanking the students and staff at IUP for their hard work over the school year, while also reminding the IUP community of graduation commencement ceremonies which will be held this weekend.
Driscoll also previewed the agenda of tonight’s Council of Trustees meeting, where the majority of items listed will be naming resolutions, including renaming the Humanities and Social Sciences Hall in honor of former IUP faculty member, Jane Leonard.

As the winter storm continues through the area, expect some more snow and possibly some slick travel conditions today.
The National Weather Service has a winter weather advisory in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning for Western Pennsylvania and the northern panhandle of West Virginia. Accuweather predicts another one to three inches of snow in Indiana County, with more snow predicted in the ridges.
PennDOT is saying that icy road conditions could make things difficult. It advises that unless you absolutely have to, stay off the roads. This will allow plow crews to plow the roads and put salt down more efficiently. PennDOT also says drivers can check with 511 PA for the latest road conditions. That can be done by a call on the phone to 511, logging on to 511pa.com or using the 511 PA app before you go.
