Turrican Flashback is a nostalgic paradise of synths and bullets
Nostalgia, as they say, is one hell of a drug, and in lockdown we’ve been getting very, very high. A generation of middle aged men – myself included – have helped push shares in Games Workshop through the roof as they rediscover the hobby that saw them through their teenage years. The Turrican Flashback collection, now available on Switch, scratches an itch that dates back even further, to a time when I was nine years old, playing games on my family’s Amiga 500.
One of the more prestigious titles in my adolescent games collection, I must have played through Turrican II a dozen times. It was among the first run-and-gun titles where exploration and discovery were just as important as reflexes. Last year’s physical collection of the classic 16-bit shooter Turrican series might be mightily appealing for fans, bundling 10 Turrican games with art books and CDs, but at nearly £80 for the whole lot it was pretty expensive. So it’s nice that ININ Games have decided to release a digital version at a lower price, albeit severely cut down in scope.
The Turrican Flashback collection contains four games, the Amiga versions of Turrican and it’s sequel, plus two pseudo sequel / prequels, Mega Turrican for the Sega Mega Drive and Super Turrican for the SNES. They’re all exactly the same as they were thirty years ago and depending on your age that’s either going to be a good or a bad thing.
Netflix has ordered a new Sonic the Hedgehog series.
The streaming giant is set to premiere Sonic Prime , a new 3D animated show of the beloved video game character, in 2022 with Sega of America and WildBrain.
The 24-episode series will see the super-fast blue hero take on a new adventure where he finds the fate of a strange new multiverse in his hands.
Netflix hopes the new show will capture the hearts of loyal followers and bring together new fans.
In a statement, Dominique Bazay, Netflix’s director of original animation, said: “Sonic is a beloved character and holds a special place in everyone’s heart including my own, I spent many hours with the Blue Blur as a kid and it’s a privilege to be able to bring this character everyone knows and loves on a brand new adventure with Netflix one that a generation of loyal fans and brand new fans around the world can enjoy.”
