Letter: Master Gardener Volunteers adapt and grow In spite of the late planting season, the garden yielded more than 500 pounds of food for Channel One Regional Food Bank and neighbors during a fall harvest festival. Written By: Jane Barton | × Thanks to the leadership team of the Olmsted County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, we managed to lead our local group of close to 100 volunteers through the pandemic. We were steadfast in “staying the course” and provided adapted offerings of gardening support to many in the county. To illustrate such an adapted offering, a team of MG volunteers recorded video lessons to educate young people about the science, nutrition and care of growing veggies and pollinators, via distanced learning lessons, partnering with other Olmsted County Extension agencies. OMC Donates 50k to Channel One Food Bank Olmsted Medical Center says it wants to improve access to nutritious food for our community. OMC says it made a $50,000 contribution to the food shelf on behalf of its employees. Channel One estimates the donation will provide 200,000 nutritious meals to people across our region.  Channel One also says it will continue its grocery delivery program during winter months, as weather conditions increasingly complicate access to food.

On Tuesday, it was a wrap as they gave out 2,700 meals and marked the final day both will be working together. While education might go on pause for winter break, food insecurity is still an issue. Hy-Vee donates 80,000 pounds of food to Channel One

Wednesday, two truckloads worth of food were delivered. Hy-Vee is committing to donating more than One million pounds of food across its eight-state region. That donation will break down to 17 food banks across Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.  It s truly a wonderful gift right ahead of the holidays, said Virginia Merritt, the Executive Director at Channel One Regional Food Bank. You know, pre-pandemic, one in 11 Minnesotans struggle with hunger, and now it is one in eight. And so, [we] really appreciate Hy-Vee s partnership. Making sure all of our neighbors have enough to eat.
