A judicial review of the government’s decision to approve the £1.7bn Stonehenge A303 tunnel is set to be heard this summer.
Campaigners against the scheme – which will involve the addition of a new section of dual carriageway to the Wiltshire road between Amesbury and Winterbourne Stoke, including a 1.8 mile-long tunnel underneath Stonehenge itself – have secured a date at the High Court in June.
The Save Stonehenge World Heritage Site group, an umbrella body of other organisations including the British Archaeological Trust and Friends of the Earth, is challenging transport secretary Grant Shapps’s decision to approve the project.
Shapps approved the project, despite the Planning Inspectorate recommending its rejection due to the effect of construction work and operation of the scheme on agricultural land in the area, as well as the effect on air quality and emissions.
Stonehenge Tunnel A JUDICIAL review hearing into the Stonehenge road project has been ordered. Campaigners have secured a hearing in their judicial review challenge about the decision to allow a new A303 dual carriageway and tunnel that would cause significant harm to the Stonehenge World Heritage Site (WHS). It comes after the Guardian reported that Transport Secretary Grant Shapps ignored official advice to review the scheme on environmental grounds. Transport Action Network (Tan) is accusing the Department for Transport (DfT) of failing to take account of the Paris Agreement, which commits signatories such as the UK to tackle climate change by taking measures to limit global warming to well below 2C.
