After the past year’s racial unrest in the U.S., Grand Canyon University students took a creative approach when asked to come up with ideas for Black History Month events.
“We wanted to not focus so much on the negative parts of Black history. So, it turned into students expressing their interests and talents,” said
Donald Glenn, Director of the Multicultural, Diversity and Inclusion Office. “We wanted to let students express themselves rather than on information that is important but may not be the best part of history.”
Different cultures, foods, hairstyles all part of the activities
While it’s going to be virtual, there will still be a lot to celebrate with UBC Okanagan’s African Caribbean Student Club (ACSC) during Black History Month.
Each February the student-led cultural organization, consisting of about 200 students, gears up to celebrate and share their cultural backgrounds. The students come from many different countries and yet have a unique passion about their history that they love to share, explains club president Jane Udochi. The club hosts events throughout the year to highlight the diversity of African and Caribbean culture.
“The ACSC strives to highlight Black excellence on campus through everything we do,” she says. “It encourages the celebration of traditions both from Africa and the Caribbean, and gives a platform for these cultures to be celebrated. For a lot of us, it reminds us of home.”
Detroit report highlights friction on City Council
Detroit A city councilwoman concerned about the rapport among council members and internal communications she claims are harassing and intimidating is pushing for immediate workplace training for the panel.
In a memorandum Friday to Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones and the city s directors of the Civil Rights & Inclusion Office and Human Resources Department, Councilwoman Raquel Castañeda-López called for training on workplace harassment and discrimination; sexual harassment; unconscious and implicit bias; and diversity, equity and inclusion. I believe any concerns related to workplace hostility, intimidation and/or discrimination should be taken seriously and addressed immediately, she said.
