RIGA - It is in the interests of both Cyprus and Latvia that the European Union (EU) had a united, firm and effective foreign policy, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (New Unity) told journalists Wednesday following a meeting with Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.
The Latvian minister indicated that both countries are interested in strengthening the role of the EU s external action service and to take an active part in forming the bloc s foreign policy. Rinkevics noted that in a way, Christodoulides visit to Latvia is symbolic as Latvia and Cyprus are marking the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties this year.

On April 30, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a phone conversation with Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides.
Christodoulides thanked China for helping Cyprus fight the COVID-19 pandemic, noting that Cyprus is willing to work with China to ensure a successful celebration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and further enhance bilateral relations. Cyprus firmly adheres to the one-China principle, supports the EU in actively developing cooperation with China, and will continue to play a constructive role in this regard. Christodoulides also briefed Wang Yi on the informal 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue held in Geneva, appreciated China for its fair stance on this issue and hoped that China would continue to take such a stance.
