• Proprietress seeks Enugu govt s intervention
No fewer than three hundred students of Providence High School, Independence layout, Enugu were on Thursday afternoon locked up inside their school premises as officials of the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) took possession of the institution on order of the court.
The students currently writing their school certificate examinations had retired to their hostels after school hours when officials of the Corporation arrived the premises with heavily armed policemen to enforce the court order said to have been obtained since 2016.
It was gathered that the school facility situate at No. 1b Nawfia close, Independence layout, Enugu, was used to obtain some loans by the original owner.
One of Nigeria’s foremost airlines, Azman Air, started the year on a promising note with the acquisition of its second Airbus A340-600 aircraft. The second delivery came barely a year after the first wide-bodied aircraft was purchased.
Though aviation globally was hit by the pandemic last year, Azman’s plan to launch an international operation was disrupted last year by the pandemic just as it couldn’t deploy the aircraft for Hajj as planned.
But the airline said with the acquisition of the second Airbus and three additional Boeing 737-800 planes, it would dominate the Aviation Market in 2021.
AMCON in 2017 took over Arik Air over alleged indebtedness by the former owners of the airline. It had in 2016 taken over the management of Aero Contractors, the oldest indigenous carrier.
With both airlines under AMCON’s management, the federal government became the biggest operator in the domestic market.
But four years later, there is uncertainty over AMCON’s exit plan in the two airlines.
Last year, speculations were rife about the move by AMCON to rebrand Arik Air into Nigeria Eagle but this was swiftly debunked by the agency.
Its Head, Corporate Communications Department, Jude Nwazor had noted that the corporation currently has more than five airlines in its aviation portfolio, saying the proposed entity has nothing to do with rebranding any of the airlines under it.
Sanusi was appointed the MD in February 2017 after it was taken over by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON).
It was learnt that his tenure, according to the contract with the AMCON, actually elapsed six months ago but it was extended till the end of December, 2020.
The former MD, however, formally left the organization on December 29, 2020 after he helped to stabilize the organization and even revive the moribund Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) wing of the airline.
The resuscitation of Aero MRO helped the airline in bringing some of its aircraft back to service as Sanusi took over when the airline had just one serviceable aircraft.
