Senate Passes Amended AMCON Bill, Empowers Agency to Seize Debtors Assets

By Deji Elumoye and Udora Orizu The Senate Wednesday passed the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria Amendment bill after considering the report of its Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions. The amendment bill passed by the upper chamber empowers the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria to, among others, take possession, manage or sell all properties traced to debtors, whether or not such assets or property is used as security/collateral for obtaining the loan in particular. It also empowers the corporation to access the Special Tribunal established by the BOFIA, 2020 for dealing with financial related matters. Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Uba Sani (APC, Kaduna Central) said the Committee engaged with stakeholders such as AMCON, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning; Central Bank of Nigeria; and Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).

Estate Owners Ask FG to Review AMCON s Conduct

By Ugo Aliogo Following the reported seizure of some plots of land at Victory Park Estate in Lekki, Lagos State, by the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), the estate owners’ association yesterday called on the federal government to review the corporation’s conduct. The association alleged that AMCON violated court orders when it sold some plots of land within the estate. Speaking to journalists at a media briefing organised by the Association of Victory Park Estate Bare-land Owners in Lagos yesterday, the Managing Partner of Pistis Partners law firm, Mayowa Owolabi, who represented some of the affected members of the association, claimed that the association acquired several plots of land within the estate from a company called Knight Rook Limited through an affiliated company called Grant Properties Limited in 2002.

Chairman of the committee, Hon. Ibrahim Makama Misau at the inauguration of the members yesterday in Abuja made the vow. Misau who is also the Chairman of the House Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation however said that the committee was not out for any form of witch-hunting, assuring that it would work with utmost caution. He called for the support of all stakeholders including the media and erstwhile staff of the privatised public enterprises and the labour unions to achieve the desired objectives.
