Orange County s 2nd COVID-19 vaccination super site opens at Soka University in Aliso Viejo

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. (KABC) Orange County s second COVID-19 vaccination super site opened Saturday, drawing hundreds of residents to get their shots, including many vulnerable seniors.
Close to 2,000 people were inoculated at the site located at Soka University in Aliso Viejo. It opened its doors less than two weeks after the county s first large site opened at Disneyland.
The Disneyland site is outdoors, but vaccines at Soka University will be administered in the campus gymnasium. Residents may use the county s Othena app or website to make an appointment for either site.
(KTLA) The COVID-19 vaccine rollout in California has been scattered and slower than expected as supplies remain scarce and counties expand access and offer the doses at different paces, but more people are getting vaccinated every day.
Those seeking to sign up for the vaccine have been plagued by confusion over who’s eligible, technical issues on appointment websites, quickly filled slots, and, for some, long wait times at vaccination sites.
At the same time, some others have been able to smoothly sign up and quickly get the needed doses.
Public health officials throughout the state have said more people would have access to the vaccine more quickly if the federal government boosts supplies of doses, something President Joe Biden has promised to do.
Officials across Southern California are opening more sites to administer coronavirus vaccine. But there are concerns that the shortage in vaccine doses could worsen before it gets better.
Authorities have said the biggest problem right now is getting enough vaccine to meet demand. At current rates, it could be June before Californians 65 and over are fully vaccinated. And full vaccination in places like L.A. County might not be possible until 2022.
Dr. Paul Simon, chief science officer for the county Department of Public Health, said Friday that if weekly vaccine shipments were to increase to 500,000 doses, the county could potentially immunize 75% of its adult population by midsummer.

Orange County is set to take another step in its effort to make the COVID-19 vaccine available.
Soka University in Aliso Viejo is scheduled to begin serving as a COVID-19 vaccine super POD (point of dispensing) location on Saturday at 8 a.m.
The new site will become the county’s second mass vaccination center, joining the Disneyland location that began operating on Jan. 13.
“Orange County is working around the clock to make the COVID-19 vaccine available to everyone who wants it,” Andrew Do, chairman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors, said in a statement. “This second vaccination site at Soka University will allow us to vaccinate thousands more residents every day.”
