Residents in Madrid voted overwhelmingly to reelect their regional assembly, conferring the most seats on the right-wing Popular Party .
With 99.9 per cent of the ballots counted on Tuesday night, the Popular Party (PP) had secured 65 seats out of 136 in the regional assembly. This was double the number from the last regional election, though still shy of an outright majority of 69 seats.
Meanwhile the Spanish Socialist Workers Party (PSOE), which leads the national government, received just 16.85 per cent of the vote, leaving it with a record low 24 seats.
The PP s conservative regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso (PP) had campaigned under the slogan of “Freedom , championing relaxed COVID-19 measures and criticising the approach of the national government, led by Socialist Pedro Sánchez, to managing the pandemic in Spain.
Spanish Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Reyes Maroto said on Monday that she had been sent a letter containing a knife covered in red stains.
Maroto received the knife just days after Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska, former Deputy Prime Minister Pablo Iglesias, and Maria Gamez, head of Spain s Civil Guard, each received packages containing threatening letters and four bullets.
Maroto s ministry published a photo of the wooden-handled folding knife and the minister spoke to reporters outside of the parliament, saying this is serious. We should be concerned.
She said police were investigating who could have sent the package and added that this and last week s threats give us more strength to defend democracy. Hatred and threats will not silence us.

PARIS (Reuters) - Airbus has defused a row over the future of a factory in southern Spain, but the Cadiz plant and its 300 jobs remain on the critical list in a potential setback to completion of a company-wide restructuring, industry sources said.
Airbus on Wednesday cancelled long-deferred plans to sell two French and German units and announced a new proposal to hive off production of small mass-produced parts.
But it postponed any physical changes to a network of more than a dozen commercial jet factories in France, Germany, Britain and Spain, prompting Spanish unions to hail a reprieve for the Puerto Real plant in Cadiz, at least for now.
