Piles of wood and asbestos have been illegally fly-tipped by “selfish, abhorrent individuals” on a road in the Romsey area. The pile of rubbish on Ryedown Lane, which also includes some peculiar items such as a green door and pieces of carpet, is believed to have been dumped between 8.30pm on Monday, April 26 and 4am on Tuesday, April 27. Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) is appealing for information to catch those responsible for the “disgusting” fly-tip. Anyone who recognises any of the items or witnessed the incident is urged to come forward. In a Facebook post appealing for information, Cllr Nick Adams-King said: “Do any of [the items] look familiar? Have you noticed someone having renovations?

Proposed asylum seeker accomodation site, Barton Stacey Plans to hold up to 500 asylum seekers on a piece of land off the A303 have been dropped by the Home Office. The government department has withdrawn its plans to build a temporary holding facility on Ministry of Defence land near Barton Stacey, after scores of objections from politicians, residents and human rights groups. The plans were labelled akin to an open prison by Cllr Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council when they were first revealed in December, with almost 3,500 people since signing a petition against it. Reacting to the news, Cllr North said: I’m relieved to have been notified by the Minister today that the Home Office has formally dropped plans for a temporary immigration centre at Barton Stacey.

Test Valley mayor opens Andover VIP shop in Chantry Centre

A pop-up shop in the chantry centre which provides vital funds to a town charity has been officially opened. The Mayor of Test Valley, Councillor Martin Hatley, opened Andover VIP’s pop-up shop in the Chantry Centre on April 27. The charity raises funds to support those with visual impairments, supporting around 400 people in and around Andover. The Mayor praised the charity’s venture into bricks and mortar, saying: “I just hope everyone who couldn’t go to the shops during various lockdowns will go back now. If you don’t use them, you lose them.” Andover VIP’s was established in 1992, and provides a variety of activities for those who are visually impaired. It is run by a team of visually impaired people alongside sighted volunteers.
