Sony’s Game & Network Services division is celebrating its best year ever with 7.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles shipped as of March 31, 2021.
Results published for the fiscal year reveal a 34 percent year-on-year increase in sales. Operating income increased from 103.8 billion yen to 342.2 billion yen. Sony attributes this “significant increase” to an increase in game software and hardware sales following the PS5’s launch as well as an increase in PS Plus subscribers. However, the increase in operating income was “partially offset by a loss resulting from strategic price points for PS5 hardware that were set lower than the manufacturing costs, as well as an increase in selling, general and administrative expenses related to the launch of PS5.” Analysts have pointed out that this is standard practice at the beginning of a console’s life cycle.

What just happened? High demand for a product can mean disappointment for consumers, but it s good news for the companies that make them. Sony PlayStation, for example, just had its best-ever financial year, and it revealed that the PS5 is selling at a faster rate than the PS4.
In its latest earnings report, Sony announced that 7.8 million PS5 consoles sold as of the end of March: 4.5 million in 2020 (it was released on November 12, 2020), and 3.3 million in the first three months of 2021. The drop in sales was expected as Sony will have increased production and stockpiled the consoles (not enough of them, obviously) before launch.
Sony has reported that 7.8 million PlayStation 5s had been shipped by 31st March 2021, in what is "PlayStation's best year ever" following the launch of the new generation of games consoles. While th
PS5 Ships 7.8 Million Systems, Outpacing PS4 Despite Shortages
Plus, it s reported that the PS5 is outselling the Xbox Series X|S by a 2:1 margin.
The PlayStation 5 is a massive success, outpacing the PlayStation 4 launch despite continued shortages at retail. Sony revealed sales figures in its latest quarterly report, detailing the period from January-March. Sony shipped 3.3 million more PS5s during the period, bringing the grand total to 7.8 million.
Given that PS5 systems are selling out nearly instantly whenever they become available, the sold-through figure may be close to the shipment number. For comparison, the PS4 shipped 7.6 million units over the same period of time, according to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad.
