INDIA is in the throes of a rampaging second wave of Covid-19. Currently, India accounts for nearly half of the daily cases across the world and one-fourth of the deaths. Corresponding to these figures is the grim fact that test positivity is around 20%, with some states recording over 30%. The second wave is far more intense than the first one, when the maximum single-day caseload was slightly over 97,000.
Other countries have also had multiple waves since the onset of the pandemic in January 2020. Chandigarh imposes daily night curfew

Chandigarh, April 28 : To contain coronavirus, Chandigarh Administrator V.P. Singh Badnore on Wednesday decided to impose curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m everyday.
All shops, malls, multiplexes, etc., will close by 5 p.m. with home delivery allowed up to 9 p.m.
All non-essential activities will be banned during the night curfew. This will come into effect on April 29 and will be in force till further orders, an official statement said.
PGI hospital Director Jagat Ram informed the meeting that their ICU beds are full.

Chandigarh: In a cause of grave concern, 70 per cent of 60 samples sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control by the PGIMER, Chandigarh, had UK variants of Covid-19 and 20 per cent of the samples had 681 H mutant.
With coronavirus cases increasing at a rate much faster in the second wave, the report from PGIMER, Chandigarh is a matter of serious concern as it has been found that the UK variant of the virus is highly contagious.

The UK variant of Covid-19 was found in 70 percent of 60 samples sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control, the PGIMER said on Thursday.
“Seventy percent of the samples had UK variant of Covid-19 and 20 percent of the samples had 681 H mutant,” said Jagat Ram, the director of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, in a statement here.
