Single-Payer Reform and Rural Health in the United States: Lessons from Our Northern Neighbor

Single-Payer Reform and Rural Health in the United States: Lessons from Our Northern Neighbor Abstract Single-payer health reform has secured its place in the mainstream American health policy debate, yet its implications for particular subpopulations or sectors of care remain understudied. Amidst many unanswered questions from policymakers and political pundits, rural health has emerged as one such area. This article explores rural Canada’s five-decade-long experience with a national publicly funded health insurance program as a valuable opportunity for cross-national learning. During March 2020, I conducted 13 semi-structured, elite stakeholder interviews with government officials, academic researchers, rural hospital executives, public health association leaders, rural health administrators, and representatives from provincial medical, hospital, and physician associations in Ontario. I found that a single-payer model confers notable advantages over a market-based model, includ

Regarding Democrats Stealing the House Seat in Iowa -- It s Not Like the Democrats Haven t Stolen An Election This Same Way Before

AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta Following up on this story written by my RedState colleague Bonchie earlier today, readers need to understand that the Democrats have used this very tactic in the past to reverse the certified outcome of an election for a seat in the House of Representatives, and they did so under circumstances where the outcome of that particular race had no impact on the operations of the House in any respect. As Bonchie explained in this story, the dispute over the outcome of the Iowa House race is now pending in the House Committee on Administration.  The Democrat challenger, Rita Hart, made a deliberate decision after the recount of ballots to NOT file any election contest in the Iowa courts as was authorized by Iowa law.  Instead, she filed the petition with the House that is now pending to have the “winning” candidate as identified by Iowa election officials Mariannette Miller-Meeks, disqualified from holding the seat on the basis that she did not recei

US Military Exposed 600,000 to Toxins in Japan and Micronesia -- and Hid It

Most Americans trust the military; a 2020 poll found 72 percent with “a great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in that institution, edged out only by small business. Many were likely picturing enlisted persons, but their trust often extends to the leadership, both uniformed and civilian. However, those making life-and-death decisions for both U.S. troops and people of other countries even in the absence of war deserve our serious scrutiny. A new book, Poisoning the Pacific, examines the military’s long role in the environmental degradation of East Asia and Pacific islands, severely impacting the health of the region’s people and U.S. personnel stationed there. Author Jon Mitchell is a Tokyo-based journalist, and much of his book focuses on Japan, especially its southernmost prefecture of Okinawa. But he also covers contamination in places like Vietnam, Guam and the Marshall Islands.
