About 30 million Nigerians would be on drugs by by 2050 if nothing was done to check the trend, the Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brig. General Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd), has said.
He also stated that 90 per cent of criminalities being perpetrated in Nigeria including banditry, insurgency, kidnapping and rape, were due to drug abuse.
According to him, with him in charge, the war against the menace of illicit drug trafficking, peddling and abuse “is a fight to finish.”
Marwa, according to a statement from the agency, spoke on Monday at three different fora in Port Harcourt where he met with various stakeholders.
Retired General Marwa who resumes this week as the head of the anti-drug law enforcement agency, it was gathered, would be welcomed by the management team of the organisation who had already prepared to receive him.
The new NDLEA boss had worked as Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) between 2018 and December, 2020, along with others to develop a blueprint on how to end drug abuse in Nigeria.
News about his appointment which leaked on Friday night has been attracting reaction.
A public commentator, Mr Timawus Mathias, on his facebook page Saturday morning admonished NDLEA officials to prepare for shake up and serious work.
