Bills introduced to help launch of voter-approved race track casinos in Nebraska

A legislative foe of expanded gambling introduced two bills Tuesday aimed at getting voter-approved casinos up and running in a timely manner. State Sen. Tom Briese of Albion, the General Affairs Committee chairman, said he offered the measures to help implement the trio of gambling initiatives passed by Nebraska voters last fall. The initiatives included a constitutional amendment allowing casino gambling at licensed horse race tracks and two laws regulating the casinos and earmarking most of the tax revenue to property tax relief. “The voters in November delivered a mandate and that is they want the casinos at race tracks and they want the property tax relief that provides,” Briese said.

Proposed Nebraska legislation establishes casino expansion parameters

Newsroom Hastings Tribune · 11:00 pm Today Senator Tom Briese, chair of the General Affairs Committee in the Nebraska Legislature, introduced LB 560, which will establish some parameters for the expansion of racetrack casino gambling approved by Nebraska voters. In introducing this legislation, Briese said, “For the last several years, on the floor of the legislature, and in the General Affairs committee, I have opposed the expansion of casino gaming in our great state. But now, our citizens have spoken and provided us with a clear mandate. They want gambling at racetrack casinos, along with the property tax relief it provides.” Briese continued on, “It’s now our obligation to ensure that the will of the voters is respected. Towards that end, I have introduced LB 560 to clarify and facilitate what Nebraskans have demanded, and provide some parameters for this expansion.”
