With much uncertainty about what future restrictions will entail and new rules on having to quarantine in hotels when returning from certain countries, it looks like more and more holidaymakers are planning to stay at home this summer.
The Portuguese government on Thursday (28 January) attributed the deadlock in implementing fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks in the European Union (EU) to the Covid-19 pandemic. Still, it ensured “close monitoring” of progress and cybersecurity throughout the bloc.
“Unfortunately, the pandemic has caused delays in implementing 5G in several EU countries, so the European Commission had to present a review of the action plan. We will monitor all developments,” Portugal’s minister for infrastructure Pedro Nuno Santos, said by videoconference in the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee on the priorities of the Portuguese presidency of the Council of the EU.

“The three institutions – Council, Parliament and Commission – have yet to agree on a joint communication. We are discussing this issue at the highest level and we need to find a rapid and pragmatic solution to resolve the governance issue”, the state secretary told a press conference after the General Affairs Council, which brings together all EU ministers and secretaries of state and this time, was held online.
Malta reiterates its continued support for EU-wide coordination on COVID19 matters

During a video conference meeting of the General Affairs Council of the European Union, Parliamentary Secretary for European Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi reiterated Malta’s support for continued EU-wide COVID-19 coordination.
The Portuguese Presidency of Council, which commenced on January 1st, convened the meeting to prepare for the EU leaders’ informal video conference meeting scheduled for this week, in which Prime Minister Robert Abela is expected to participate.
In his intervention, Dr Zrinzo Azzopardi welcomed the work by the European Commission on behalf of all member states in procuring the vaccines. He stated that it is now important for all member states and the Commission to work together to ensure that all the contractors live up to their obligations.
