Ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the 59th Presidential Inaugural Committee hosted a virtual welcome event on Saturday to honor America’s history and the incoming administration.
Hollywood personalities including Whoopi Goldberg and Darren Criss appeared in the livestream, which opened with a musical number from the resistance revival chorus. Girl scouts followed by doing the pledge of allegiance.
First generation Mexican American Cristela Alonzo introduced the event, noting that she is a daughter of immigrants, with Spanish as her first language. This is the beginning of the next chapter in our country, she said. Remember, change is possible. We proved that this past November.

That’s what elected officials from New Mexico called what happened when a mob of right-wing Trump supporters stormed and briefly took over the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, as the House and Senate were debating challenges to election results based on unfounded conspiracy theories about voter fraud.
The Senate voted against any objections that would undermine the majority of voters in any states. While the House also defeated the attempt to challenge the electors in Arizona and Pennsylvania, more than half of the Republican caucus voted in favor of overturning the election results, including New Mexico’s only Republican member of the delegation.

U.S. Rep.-elect Yvette Herrell of New Mexico says she ll be among Republican members of Congress who will formally object on Wednesday to the certification of the Electoral College tally of votes.
Herrell said Thursday on Facebook that she would vote against certifying the Electoral College results in which President-elect Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, the Roswell Daily Record reported.
Herrell in November unseated first-term incumbent Democrat Xochitl Torres Small to represent the 2nd Congressional District in central and southern New Mexico.
Herrell is set to be sworn into office on Sunday, three days before House and Senate hold a joint session to certify the vote results.
