Bill to Remove Bad Cops in California Proceeds
Assemblymembers in California’s public safety committee approved a bill that would allow the state to decertify police officers who have engaged in serious misconduct on the job.

(CN) Senate Bill 2, which would allow California to decertify police officers who show persistent misconduct or incidents of excessive force, passed an Assembly committee Tuesday morning, clearing another hurdle in what appears to be an all-but-certain trip to Governor Gavin Newsom’s desk.
Widely regarded as the most aggressive police reform bill to be introduced in this legislative cycle, Senate Bill 2, authored by Senator Steven Bradford, a Democrat from Gardena, would create a process whereby police officers can have their certification removed in the instance where serious misconduct is revealed.
SANTA FE – Republican lawmakers in the minority of the New Mexico Legislature are objecting to private negotiations with the Democratic governor regarding $1.75 billion in federal pandemic relief and how it will be spent.
On Monday the spending was discussed during a closed meeting of a panel of leading legislators, disappointing Republicans. They called for an additional session of the Legislature to debate the funding and the veto.
“She is completely bypassing the appropriating body,” Rep. Rod Montoya said following the closed discussion he took part in.
Lujan Grisham believes the funds are hers to appropriate, because of the way the federal statute is written.
RECALL ELECTION-California voters will decide on Sept. 14 whether to throw Gov. Gavin Newsom out of office, making him the second governor in state history and just the fourth nationwide to face a recall.
The announcement today from Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis comes after weeks of procedural wrangling by Democratic lawmakers and state officials to speed up the process for choosing a recall election date. Their apparent calculation is that the Democratic governor has better odds of defeating the GOP-backed recall if an election is held sooner rather than later.
“I believe we have chosen a fair and reasonable date for this election to take place,” Kounalakis said in a statement. “It has always been my intention to choose an election date that gives election officials and the public ample time to ensure a smooth election with broad participation.”
