The new measure expands on a previous antitrust bill introduced by Klobuchar designed to bring “major reforms to merger and anticompetitive conduct enforcement,” which included measures to boost antitrust enforcers’ budgets. She has also said she plans to bring back other tech accountability bills, including one to regulate online political ads.
Also on Tuesday, Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, circulated a memo to her GOP colleagues urging them to work on tech accountability, potentially alongside Democrats, even as she criticized companies such as Twitter Inc. for suspending former President Donald Trump. For many of them, the ceremony was a moving reaffirmation of the strength and durability of American democracy just 14 days after an insurrection that had shaken both the nation and its allies around the world.
“There are 190 ambassadors in Washington, I would say there were at least 180 ambassadors there,” Daniel Mulhall, Ireland’s ambassador in the United States, told VOA in a phone interview. “I can’t imagine anybody [who’s invited] not being there, except somebody being sick or something.”
In his inaugural address on Wednesday, Joe Biden laid out for Americans the hard truths the country faces as he sees it – among them, a nation ravaged by a pandemic, calls for racial justice, and the rise of political “extremism”. One key solution for dealing with those enormous problems comes down to one word: “Unity”.
“To overcome these challenges – to restore the soul and to secure the future of America – requires more than words,” Biden said. “It requires that most elusive of things in a democracy: Unity. Unity.”
He used the word eight times in the 21-minute speech, which also featured the word “together” seven times.

As part of his inauguration as the 46th President of the United States today, Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden received a bounty of gifts from lawmakers, including a large painting by Robert S. Duncanson loaned to the couple by the Smithsonian Museum, and presented by Republican Senator Roy Blunt of Missouri.
The 1859 work, titled
Landscape With Rainbow, was painted by Duncanson, a Black artist, two years before the onset of the Civil War, and depicts a pastoral scene sparsely populated with cows and people, with a rainbow above that symbolizes renewal and hope.
