WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Donald Trump on Wednesday became the first president in U.S. history to be impeached twice, as 10 of his fellow Republicans joined Democrats in the House of Representatives to charge him with inciting an insurrection in last week’s violent rampage in the Capitol.
The vote in the Democratic-controlled House was 232-197 following the deadly assault on American democracy, although it appeared unlikely the swift impeachment would lead to Trump’s ouster before his four-year term ends and Democratic President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on Jan. 20.
The Senate’s Republican majority leader, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democratic calls for a quick impeachment trial, saying there was no way to conclude it before Trump leaves office. But even if he has left the White House, a Senate conviction of Trump could lead to a vote on banning him from running for office again.

WASHINGTON Occasionally, the nation’s corporate capitalists in this case, its six dominant banks do something right. And their refusal to lend big oil any money to “Drill, baby, drill!,” in former GOP Gov. Sarah Palin’s words, in the ecologically vital Arctic National Wildlife Refuge may stop lame-duck GOP Oval Office occupant Donald Trump’s last-minute scheme to let the oil giants do so.
And if the banks’ decision doesn’t stop degradation of ANWR, home to polar bears, caribou, elk, and other vital species in a pristine environment, an earlier lawsuit by Alaskan native peoples, environmental groups, and even the neighboring Yukon provincial government in Canada could end it, too.

LANSING Michigan’s 101st Legislature met for the first time Wednesday amid a stepped-up presence by Michigan State Police, but some lawmakers said it was hard to say whether they faced a greater danger from the lack of gun control inside the Capitol or the refusal of many lawmakers to wear face masks during the coronavirus pandemic.
“They both are extremely dangerous they both are fatal,” said newly elected state Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Detroit, who said he joined several other lawmakers in choosing to sit in the public gallery, rather than on the House floor, because his seat is close to several Republican lawmakers who do not mask up.
