Turning in the direction of the new year with optimism, joy, and a certainty that sweeter days are to come is a deep-of-heart practice that can be done at any time on our own, of course.
But finding a fun, family-focused festival that folds in the promise of the new year, and several do-it-home projects, too, feels like a fast and fantastic way to experience optimism in a shared setting.
Happy news: That can be done from the place you now sit over six sweet January days.
For the Japanese American National Museum s annual Oshogatsu Family Festival is happening in a virtual way in 2021.

New Year s Day in Southern California has long been abloom with beautiful traditions, from a blossom-big parade in Pasadena to a tremendous Little Tokyo festival, one filled with Taiko drums, delicious foods, and a joyful view to the days ahead.
The first day of 2021 will look quite different, in terms of every in-person event we ve long enjoyed, as pandemic considerations have changed, well, everything.
But our wish to welcome the coming days in ways we remember can still be met, thanks to the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California.

presents its annual listing of passings in the community, we offer our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in this most difficult of years.

Sumako Azuma II
Sumako Azuma II (Janice Aiso Edesa), 61, on July 24. The North American representative to Azuma Ryū in Japan, she taught Japanese classical dance for 45 years, training 14 students to earn the natori degree and one to earn the shihan degree.

The Japanese American National Museum will celebrate the new year with “Oshogatsu Virtual Family Festival: 2021 Year of the Ox,” a five-day festival featuring interactive festivities for all ages including multilingual story times, play performances and a JANM membership raffle for participants beginning on Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021 and running through Friday, Jan. 8, 2021.
