Transfusion blood shortage in metropolitan area The spread of the new coronavirus is threatening the supply of blood for transfusions in the Tokyo Metropolitan area.
The Japanese Red Cross Society s regional blood center says donations have fallen below monthly targets since April, when a state of emergency was declared that caused people to work or study at home.
In Tokyo, Saitama, Chiba and Kanagawa Prefectures, about 40 percent of blood collection vehicles have been immobilized since April. Donations of blood in 400 milliliter quantities, for which demand is greatest, have fallen below target by 45,700 units.
With the number of surgeries picking up again, blood stocks fell to 80 percent of the normal standard, or three days supply, between mid-October and November.

Blood supplies are rapidly running low in the Tokyo metropolitan area because the novel coronavirus pandemic has severely limited donations through the usual routes.
The Japanese Red Cross Society (JRC) usually sends bloodmobiles to corporations and universities to collect blood from groups of people.
But this year, 40 percent of group blood donations were canceled in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba prefectures because more employees and students are working or taking online lessons at home.
According to the JRC’s blood center for the Kanto-Koshinetsu region, the number of blood donors from April through October in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures was down by 9 percent, or about 45,000 donors, from initial expectations.
Feeling festive?
This year’s subdued holiday mood is reflected in retail spaces and department stores, with comparatively pared-back illuminations and displays. Indeed, the observant may notice that some department stores are actually reusing decorations from last year. It’s a wise cost-cutting move given the circumstances, since it will take more than a bit of tinsel to revitalize consumer confidence.
In lieu of in-store excitement, a surprising number of Christmas promotions are going online. While some of the biggest holiday drops, such as a range of jewelry based on Disney Twisted-Wonderland, a
bishonen (“beautiful youth”) mobile game featuring characters inspired by Disney villains, may have physical pop-ups, purchases are online only.
